Where can I get it?
Direct your phone's WAP browser to http://im.mtn.co.za/xhtml-mp or dial *123*14# and follow the instructions.
How much does it cost?
During the promotion period you will be charged for the data usage of noknok, as well as sending MMSes to offline users. However joining chatrooms, sending files and offline IM messages will be free.
Do I need a new phone?
Some phones are supported by Java applications while others are supported by a WAP interface. Unfortunately not all phones are supported, but we're constantly working to expand the list of supported handsets.
Dial *123*14# to test if your phone supports IM.
How does 'presence' work?
'Presence' will work in a similar way as it does on existing fixed Internet IM services. Users will be able to see which of their contacts are available to chat before initiating an IM session.
Different levels of 'presence' will be indicated, for example "Available", "Away" or "Busy". You can also set your status text and, on some handsets, a status image.
Who can I chat with?
You can add anyone who is using the service, even people who do not have the IM client installed - they will receive your messages as SMSes or MMSes. You can even add Vodacom friends (although Vodacom customers cannot receive multimedia messages or participate in chatrooms).
Can I chat with multiple people at the same time?
Yes, you can invite up to 10 people to join a conversation. You can also invite people to chat rooms. However, not all handsets will support these features.
Can I chat with several people simultaneously? Yes, you can have up to seven simultaneous conversations depending on your handset application.
What if I get a new phone?
Your contacts are stored on the server so all you need to do is download a new application and you're set to go on your new phone.
Can I add people from my phone book?
On selected handsets you can use the import tool. Have a look in the "Tools" section of the mobile application.
How do my friends know I'm online?
The presence icon will show your online status. If the buddy doesn't have the IM application installed or is an offline user he will appear as gray.
Can everyone see if I'm online?
No, only those you've accepted as contacts can see your status.
What's the difference between "Logout" and "Exit"?
If you
select "Exit" the application closes, but you're still online and the
application will start again if you receive messages. If you select
"Logout" you will be set to offline and receive your messages on SMS.
What happens if I receive a call while I'm using the client?
You will be able to retrieve the call. The application will resume when you finish your call.
Can I send images?
Yes. If the recipient cannot receive images the option will be disabled.
Can I be logged in from two different clients?
No.
How can I be sure that it's safe to use the service?
You should
only accept requests from people you know. We strive to make the service
as safe as possible and we strongly advise that you follow the following
rules:
- Do not accept invitations from people you don't know;
- Do not agree to meet people you only met on the service; and
- Do not use the service for anything illegal or explicit.
Usage of the service is on your own conscience.
Can I access the service from abroad?
If MTN has a GPRS roaming agreement with your destination network, then you would be able to use the service while roaming.
What will I be charged?
Only data rates will apply during the three months promotional period. If you choose to send a picture to an offline buddy via MMS you will be charged standard MMS rates.
What's the Watcher List?
The Watcher List shows you who can currently see your 'presence' information.
